I've been trying my hand at learning the art of studio lighting. Glass and liquids have been extremely difficult, but I think I'm starting to wrap my amateur head around some of the basic ideas of light and refraction. I'm really happy how the opacity of the glass and lack of light reflections came out in these. Still lots to learn...

On Saturday afternoon, lightning struck the house across the street from our beach house. Despite the pouring rain the direct hit to the roof set it ablaze. I called 911 immediately and the fire was responded to by no less than 5 fire companies; Bethany Beach, Rehoboth Beach, Millville, Lewes and Roxanna. The speed of their response and the quick extinguishing of the blaze was amazing. In the off season— with no one in the community but ourselves— the outcome could have been disastrous. Interesting note— this house was one of the few in the community that did not have lightning rods. More photos after the jump as well as a complete Aperture gallery here.

It’s been a long month and a half. The Christmas rush is over and a couple of major projects have wrapped up. I feel a little exhausted and I’m looking forward to just relaxing for the holidays.
This the first image from my new D200 with 18-200 VR lens. Nothing speculator- and nowhere near catching how spectacular the sunset was tonight. The 18-200 is not a great lens, but it’s size and range is going to make it a great walk-about-travel lens. Definitely not a replacement for my stellar (and massive) 70-200 VR.
I have a lot to rethink with the D200. It’s high-res sensor seems to be extremely sensitive to poor technique and cheap glass. My laissez-faire shooting style doesn’t work so well with this pro camera. I hope by the end of the holidays I’ll have the camera mastered and my hackish-amateur technique refined.
I’m looking forward to getting get back to taking more pictures, posting regularly to this blog and finally getting some storage/image cataloging/Aperture tasks complete.
